Low-Code Marathon – Do’s and Don’ts on your way to transforming the future of your business

Reading Time: 2min17s

It’s been my pleasure to take part in the first three days of the Low-Code Marathon, hosted by Creatio. The company is on a mission to improve global understanding of low-code/no-code technology, the positive impact it can have on innovation within an organisation, and to be at the forefront of beneficial transformation in the world of business automation.

On day 1 of the event, I was invited to talk on the topic “Do’s and Don’ts on your way to transforming the future of your business” and I would like to take this opportunity to share the key takeaways from my lecture.

Low-Code – Do’s and Don’ts

My top three things to do at the outset of transformation within your business are all about planning. Making sure that you can define the value to be derived from all aspects of the changes that you are considering, in detail, the impact this change will have on all the parties involved. Not just one or two departments within your own business, but the wider community of colleagues, customers, suppliers, investors, and industry analysts.

If you can define value and truly understand the impact of what you’re about to do, then you have all the information you need to create a top-class communications programme that ensures that everyone knows what’s coming and, most importantly, how it will affect them. In turn, this becomes a structured marketing campaign (for want of a better phrase); a campaign that promotes an understanding of the benefits of change.

The third “Do” in my list focuses on the skills you will need to grow through the transformation programme. What will jobs of the future look like within my organisation? Do we have those skills in-house already? Do we have talented people who can acquire new skills and grow with us? And most importantly, what happens to people who will be displaced by the forthcoming changes?

These questions are a key part of the planning process ahead of your change process. If you can’t answer them all, then go back to the drawing board!

Erik Hale, the moderator of the Low-Code Marathon, ran a poll across the audience viewing my lecture and asking them to vote on which of the three “Do’s” they felt most important. A technical hitch masked Erik’s announcement of the outcome, however, the comments running through the chat panel appeared to come down on number 2 (Do: Analyse impact on all parties) as the majority vote. I don’t disagree with this opinion poll as understanding all aspects of the impact of change is key to the success of the programme.

The top three “Don’ts” on my list are more reminders to help you get the “Do’s” right than they are key points in their own right. Specifically, making assumptions and underestimating the impact of change are reminders to plan thoroughly. And refusing to flex, or sticking rigidly to Plan A, is a reminder that innovation and transformation will morph en route; new things will become apparent along the way and must be taken into account using the same planning tools that were used at the outset: defining value, understanding impact, and assessing the skills needed for success.

Where to watch the Low-Code Marathon webinar?

If you would like to watch the 16-minute lecture in full, you can find it on YouTube as part of the recording of Day 1 of the Marathon. My speech starts at 1:05:30 and finishes at 1:21:30 on the YouTube time bar.

I hope you get to see some of the Marathon sessions as they run real-time until June 14th or get to watch the event on the daily recordings posted to YouTube. There is a lot of great speakers and some inspiring content.

Have fun picking up new ideas and, it goes without saying, come back to me if you would like to talk about innovation and transformation within your own organisation.
